The LHHS Web Design program competed in its second SkillsUSA regional competition and continued its reign as the program to beat in Region One. After a sixth place showing at the National SkillsUSA Web Design contest, web design teacher Steven Paluch’s students were excited to show that last year was not a fluke by sweeping both web contests. Due to the large number of competitors, this year’s web design contest was split into two categories, advanced and intro. LHHS seniors Alexandra and Kayla received their second consecutive web design gold in the advanced competition with Shay and Jessica receiving silver and Wayne and Austin taking bronze. Intro web design winners included Danielle and Shelby (Gold), David and Nolan (Silver), and Carlos and Markus (Bronze).

LHHS annually enters students in the job interview contest at regionals as well as state. This year both Aranguena and Paluch entered students in this competition where winners are determined from a round of interviews lasting 5-7 minutes and conducted by two interviewers. Six finalists are picked and then subjected to a second interview in front of a panel of five judges. Lake Havasu proudly swept the competition with Kayla (Gold), Tyler (Silver), and Dan (Bronze) receiving the medals.

After taking a year off from the bridge building competition, Havasu returned to the top of the medal stand this year with a gold medal won by Christian and silver won by Nick. The bridge building contest consists of students drafting a structural layout according to specs, and then building it from 1/8” balsa sticks. The bridge is then placed inside a machine that runs a stress test and eventually breaks the bridge in the center. Efficiency calculations are then made based on weight of structure compared to the max weight supported prior to breaking.

Again, Lake Havasu High School’s SkillsUSA competitors arrived at another competition with poise and respect and left with success and pride for their school. They will be traveling the 12th and 13th of April to compete against students from all across the state who share the same goals and values as themselves. Wish them luck!

Note: Regional competition was funded mainly by the recently passed JTED (WAVE) along with many very much appreciated tax credit donations. Thanks to all who contribute to SkillsUSA, and thanks to Mr. Aranguena for the story and pictures.
