Volunteers

Starline Elementary appreciates and values volunteers. Are you interested in volunteering? By volunteering, you enrich and enhance the learning opportunities of our students. Volunteers provide help to students, teachers, office staff, and the PTA. By being a volunteer you share in the responsibility of improving the education of all students at Starline. Volunteer training sessions are available through our volunteer coordinators.

PAWSitive Paws

The National Pet Partners Program

  • Founded in 1977
  • More than 15,000 animal handler teams in all 50 states
  • Rigorous requirements
    • Animals are evaluated for obedience and temperament
    • Handlers receive on-going training
    • Animals and handlers are re-evaluated as a team every two years
    • Pre-visit health and grooming procedures are stipulated
  • National Pet Partner organization provides liability insurance to all registered teams
  • Teams work in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, medical offices, schools, day care centers, and at community events

Purpose of PAWSitive Paws

  • Goal setting program for primary grades
    • Teachers and students set goals
    • When goals are achieved students earn an appointment with a dog
    • Twenty minute appointments for kindergartners; 30 minutes for 1st and 2nd graders
  • Appointment activities may include:
    • Reading
    • Puzzles
    • Memory cards and math cards
    • Story writing on doggie stationery
    • Conversation
  • Handler's primary job is to be the animal's guardian; the reward to the student is time with the dog
