Upcoming Elections for School Board

Only two candidates filed to run for the Lake Havasu Unified School District Governing Board’s sole vacant 4-year seat. As a result, there will be no election — both candidates will become board members by default.

According to Mohave County School Superintendent Mike File, the lack of an election is due to a state statute: If two or fewer candidates file to run for a position on a Mohave County school board, no campaign will be necessary. Candidates Lisa Roman and Archana Aliyar will become Havasu’s newest school board members without a race.

Roman is a volunteer in Havasu’s public school system of several years, and has served on Starline Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Association board since 2015. She was certified as a substitute teacher at Lake Havasu High School and Thunderbolt Middle School.

Aliyar, a real estate agent of Realty ONE Group, has managed several businesses, and once served as chief financial officer of Havasu Landing Casino.

The real race will take place this November, where voters will decide between incumbent Nicole Cohen and Arizona State University criminal justice senior lecturer Danny Pirtle, who will be running for a seat left vacant by former board member Allen Ward.

Ward vacated his position on the school board this year due to a family emergency. His departure, however, reduced the school board to four members, removing the board’s ability to break tied decisions until this year’s election is concluded.

Cohen, who is expected to end her current four-year term this December, has chosen to run for Ward’s vacant seat rather than pursue a second four-year term.
