Little Knights Preschool Press Release

For Immediate Release July 20, 2018

Everyone knows that Lake Havasu High School is the home of the mighty Knights, but did you know it is also home to some “Little Knights”? The Little Knights Preschool, a fully licensed and certified daycare center, is a learning lab for high school students interested in early childhood education. It is located on the high school campus, complete with classroom and playground area for up to thirty-six preschool age children. Marie Hendry is the preschool coordinator who, along with Cathy Bagby, two part-time classroom instructors, and the CTE - Early Childhood Education students at LHHS instruct and care for these lucky preschoolers.

The ECE courses at LHHS give students a unique opportunity to gain hands on experience in the field that they may wish to pursue as a career. For some, it also provides the chance to find out that preschool teaching is not a career path they wish to follow. Students find out that preschoolers are not all giggles and snuggles and smiles, but require constant care and attention in order to provide a safe, nurturing environment.

Ninety percent of a child’s brain development occurs before age 5, and the Little Knights are fortunate to participate in “Quality First”, a signature program of the statewide organization First Things First. First Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization funding early education and health programs to help kids be successful upon entering kindergarten. Some, but not all, of the Little Knights are awarded scholarship funding via First Things First, making the LHHS based preschool an affordable option for their families.

The Little Knights Preschool recently earned a remarkable 5-Star rating from the “Quality First” program, which is the highest level of achievement, reflecting quality far exceeding standards! Criteria for ratings are rigorous and include health and safety practices, staff qualifications, teacher-

child interaction, learning environment, lessons, child assessment and parent communication. This rating reflects several months of scrupulous adjustments in the program, as well as three rounds of professional program observation and review during the months of March, April and May. Both Ms. Hendry and Ms. Bagby set meticulous standards and guidelines for their high school students in order to “reach for the 5-stars”, and the ECE students took them all to heart! They took the program very seriously, and the diligence put in by everyone certainly paid off.

The Little Knights Preschool moved up from their previous four-star rating, earning the only 5-star rating of Lake Havasu City’s five “Quality First” preschools! That boils down to a lot of hard work and attention to detail for LHHS staff and students...all while caring for those precious little Knights! Congratulations on a job well done, to everyone involved in giving our Little Knights a quality start to their education!
